Women’s Health Physiotherapy

What is Women’s Health Physiotherapy?

Women's Health Physiotherapy, also known as pelvic health physiotherapy or pelvic floor physiotherapy, is a specialized area of physiotherapy that focuses on the assessment and treatment of conditions related to women's health, particularly those affecting the pelvic region.

It addresses the unique needs and concerns of women throughout various life stages, including pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause, as well as conditions specific to the female pelvic area.

I work closely with individuals to assess, diagnose, and treat a range of conditions related to pelvic health.

Some common areas of focus in Women's Health Physiotherapy include:

  • Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: The pelvic floor muscles support the organs in the pelvic region, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum. Women's Health Physiotherapists assess and treat pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, which can manifest as issues such as pelvic pain, urinary incontinence (leakage), fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic floor muscle weakness or tightness.

  • Pregnancy and Postpartum Care: Women's Health Physiotherapy provides support and guidance to women during pregnancy and after childbirth. Physiotherapists can help with managing pregnancy-related musculoskeletal conditions, such as back or pelvic pain, and provide education on safe exercises, postural awareness, and body mechanics. Postpartum, they assist with pelvic floor muscle retraining, scar management (e.g., from cesarean section or episiotomy), and recovery after childbirth.

  • Pre- and Post-Gynecological Surgery: Women's Health Physiotherapists work collaboratively with gynecologists to provide pre- and post-operative care for gynecological procedures. They may assist in optimizing pelvic floor muscle function before surgery and support recovery and rehabilitation afterward.

  • Menopause and Pelvic Health: Menopause brings hormonal changes that can impact pelvic health. Women's Health Physiotherapists can address concerns such as urinary urgency, frequency, vaginal dryness, and sexual dysfunction through education, exercises, and other therapeutic interventions.

  • Sexual Dysfunction: Women's Health Physiotherapy can play a role in addressing sexual dysfunction, including conditions such as vaginismus, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), and decreased sexual satisfaction. Physiotherapists may employ techniques like pelvic floor muscle relaxation exercises, manual therapy, and education to assist in improving sexual well-being.

  • Bowel Health: Women's Health Physiotherapists can help manage conditions affecting bowel function, such as constipation, faecal incontinence, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). They may provide advice on diet, lifestyle modifications, and exercises to promote bowel health.

The aim of Women's Health Physiotherapy is to optimize pelvic health, improve quality of life, and empower women to actively participate in their own care. By addressing pelvic floor and related musculoskeletal issues, these specialized physiotherapists help women regain or maintain optimal pelvic function and overall well-being.
